About Sue Arthur
As a child Sue enjoyed a rural upbringing, spending most of her spare time with a variety of domestic and farm animals. Horses were always her favourite, however, and she was a keen rider. Sue always knew she wanted a career caring for animals and as she enjoyed all the science subjects at school, veterinary medicine seemed an obvious choice. In the mid-sixties the veterinary profession was still predominantly made up of male vets in rural mixed practices, so Sue's career choice was not met with universal approval! Her ambitions were realised when she gained a place at the Dick Vet in edinburgh, qualifying in 1974.
After graduating Sue worked for 2 years in the large animal practice at the Bush, dealing with farm animals and horses. In 1976 she left to set up her own practice in Gorebridge. For several years she ran the practice by herself enjoying the "Herriot life-style" of treating all creatures great and small. Over the years the practice grew and evolved, the farm work dropped, and the small animal and horse work increased.
In 2008 Sue decided to sell the small animal part of the practice and the associated administrative work load. She now enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle running a small equine only practice, with time to pursue some of her other interests - getting back in the saddle again and extending her garden. She also has time to visit family and horses in Ireland more frequently.
